IP and manual location selection

Learn how IP detection, country and region links, manual choices and language selection work.

Every page load without a supported country in its URL starts in IP mode. The current connection supplies the country and, when available, region and timezone; the country supplies the date format. On Azure, only the country is detected, so its default region and timezone are used. If a trusted connection address is unavailable, the unavailable-location notice is shown. Old saved location or format settings do not override a new load.

A country in the URL selects Manual mode and that country’s default region. A valid region parameter selects that region instead. The country sets the date format, and the selected region sets the default timezone. Only country and region are supported location parameters; format and timezone parameters are ignored.

Changing Country selects Manual mode and resets the region, date format and timezone to that country’s defaults. Changing Region also selects Manual mode and applies its default timezone and the country’s date format.

Switching to IP removes location overrides from the current URL and requests the current connection’s location again. Calculator inputs and the selected tab remain. A lookup in progress is shown; if it fails or the country is unsupported, the site shows the US/California fallback and an unavailable-location notice. Retry by switching Manual, then IP, or reload.

Changing a timezone selects Manual mode and its configured default country and region, plus that country’s date format. A timezone may cover many regions: Toronto selects Canada/Ontario, Winnipeg selects Canada/Manitoba, Paris selects France/Île-de-France and New York selects the United States/New York. These are selection defaults, not a precise location estimate.

Language is chosen manually. Unlocalized URLs use English, regardless of IP, browser language or saved language. Localized URLs keep their selected language. Changing language changes only the interface: country, region, city, timezone, date and time format, IP/Manual mode, theme, calculator tab and inputs stay the same. It does not repeat IP detection when temporary browser storage is available. If that storage is blocked, navigation still works, but some settings return to defaults and detection may repeat.

Worked example

Open country=CA&region=CA-BC: Manual, Canada, British Columbia, ISO dates and Vancouver time. Select IP to use your current connection instead.
